03THE BACKING MECHANISM

The vault checks this after every wrap and redeem, and a failed check reverts the transaction. USDC and zkUSD both use six decimal places, so the program compares them unit for unit, with no rounding.
- Why “at least,” not “exactly”?
- Anyone can send USDC to a vault account without minting zkUSD. That extra USDC should not block anyone, so the rule allows a surplus.
- Why multiple vault accounts?
- The program supports sharding reserves and applying per-shard caps. The actual number of shards comes from on-chain configuration, and this page reads every one of them.
- Why is supply public?
- Aggregate supply can be compared with public backing without exposing individual confidential amounts. Private payment details and public aggregate accounting serve different purposes.
